What is a resume?;
A tool to inform an employer:
- who you are
- how you can be contacted
- the position you want
- the experience, skills and abilities you have to offer
A resume is also:
- A personal history of you
- A means of compiling basic facts highlighting your accomplishments
- A self-marketing tool designed to get you the job interview
Resume Tips;
Do:
- Keep your resume to one or two pages
- Always use computer spellcheck AND have resume proof-read by at least one other person
- Keep your resume consistent (consistent font size; line up headings, etc.)
- Include career objective (what position you are seeking)
- Emphasize special skills you possess that are relevant to the position
- Use white/cream coloured paper only
- ALWAYS let your references know that you are using their name, and to expect calls from potential employers
Don't:
- Use abbreviations
- State salary requirements
- Indicate age, race, religion, political affiliation, social insurance number
- State why you quit past employment
- Submit a hand-written resume, unless stated by employer
- Submit a resume without having it proof-read by someone
